    Advanced Technical Writer

    Join our team as an Advanced Technical Writer to work on NASA's Space Network Ground Segment Sustainment (SGSS) Program.

    Responsibilities

    • Create, develop, plan, write, and edit complex operational, instructional, interactive electronic technical manuals (IETMs), maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia or web-based publication
    • Conduct interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation
    • Research and translate technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users
    • Acquire subject knowledge by interviewing product developers, observing performance of production methods, referring to technical specifications, blueprints, engineering illustrations, and trade journals
    • Recommend formats
    • Responsive to technical and customer requirements
    • Produce products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards
    • Mentor junior writers, providing feedback and critiquing work to assist with developing leadership skills, documentation skills and expertise with production tools, projects, etc.; provide input to junior writers PC for evaluation, recommendations for skills improvement and objective setting
    • Research new production tools and 3rd party software to help improve work processes by conducting research via the Internet, trade journals, seminars, user forums, etc. to solve current workflow problems and suggest to management ways to improve our documentation process
    • Provide recommendations and ideas to the technical documentation team, project leads, management and the customer on best work practices, workflow, presentation, structure and organization of materials by developing new work processes and methods using existing authoring tools, new authoring tools and 3rd party plug-ins in order to improve work process efficiency and overall quality of customer deliverables
    • Plan, budget and schedule technical writing projects including the coordination of work assignments with other members of the technical documents team; lead teams/large projects
    • Support CMMI efforts by defining methods and procedures on new assignments
    • Document engineering processes and specifications by editing software developer and engineering staff's notes and procedures and apply formatting in order to support the writing and publication of hardware and software test procedures, white papers, readme files, etc.
    • Proactively inform management team and project leads to report project status, issues or concerns, including issues of scope, schedule
    • Ensure accurate preparation of documents for interim and final delivery to customer by creating and preparing materials (agendas, etc.) to facilitate various manual validations/verifications with the customer

    Qualifications

    • Required – able to obtain Secret Clearance; active Secret Clearance preferred.
    • Strong proficiency with editing and production tools (FrameMaker, MS Word, Arbor Text, etc.)
    • Uses professional concepts and company objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways
    • Strong English language skills including accurate definitions and spelling of relevant technical words, rules of composition, and grammar
    • Strong written communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with the target audience
    • Strong ability to research and interpret data
    • Strong working knowledge of DoD MIL Standards and style guides and the ability to adhere to and implement such standards to technical documentation preferred
    • Considered as an expert in several areas of their job (i.e. production tools, projects, DoD MIL STD, IETMs, etc.)
    • Strong knowledge of publication systems

    *US Citizenship is required by law, regulation, executive order, or government contract.

     

    Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree plus a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
